Connecticut was one of the first states to offer special plates for motorists with a good driving record. These started in 1937 and were originally "Initial" plates. Three letters at first, then in 48, Four letters were allowed and they were called "Vanity" plates. By the seventies, you could get up to 6 letters/numbers used.
