By 1956, it was neccessary to have a standardized plate size for all 50 states. This would allow for six digit plates
as well. With a new generation of plates to be made, several different color combinations were tried out. These rare "Paint
Test" plates showed what options the DMV had to choose from. They are quite shocking to see after we have had the same old
"White on Dark Blue" bases from 1957 till basically 2002 when the last of those should be off the road.
